SOUTH BEND, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) – South Bend says goodbye, as hundreds attended Bishop Emeritus John D’Arcy’s funeral liturgies Wednesday.
It was a bittersweet atmosphere in Saint Matthew Cathedral as mourners filed past Bishop D'Arcy's casket.
Most Rev. Kevin Rhoades, current Bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend, presided over the Reception of the Body service and morning prayer.
"I think it's very natural to mourn and grief is normal, especially when you love someone,” said Bishop Rhoades. “But at the same time, it's not grief without hope because of our faith, so that's where the joy comes in.”
Bishop D'Arcy was dressed in vestments and a mitre on his head traditional to bishops.
A rosary was held at 5 p.m. with the Mass of Transferal following at 7 p.m.
Parishioners reflected on what Bishop D'Arcy meant to them, and how although it’s a sad time they’re happy he’s in a better place.
Megan Swaim, associate director of the diocesan Office of Youth Ministry, says Bishop D'Arcy was a spiritual advisor to her; to a point he was a grandfather-like figure.
"The thing that he told me over and over and over was to spend time in silence," Swaim says. "Then, listen to the Lord speaking into my own heart. It's something I think of nearly every day,”
Neal Eakins, a student at Mishawaka Marian High School, says he often served the altar at Masses celebrated by Bishop D'Arcy
"He was always rejoicing," Eakins remembered the bishop. "He knew that he was going to spend the rest of his life with the Lord."
Swaim says Bishop D’Arcy was like another grandfather to her, and served as her spiritual adviser for years.
Fort Wayne liturgies for Bishop D’Arcy will be held Thursday and Friday at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
A Reception of the Body service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday. Visitation will last throughout the day. The rosary will be prayed at 5 p.m. and an evening prayer service will start at 7 p.m.
Bishop D'Arcy's funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at noon. The funeral will be televised on 21Alive.
