FREMONT, Indiana (Indiana's NewsCenter)--They’re putting the finishing touches on Fremont’s downtown beautification project that sports new pavement, new sidewalks and lighting and other amenities. And as we speak finishing touches are being applied by Mother Nature on another important amenity of life in this town, the grapes at Satek Winery.
“Before we opened we came up with a mission statement ‘good wine, good fun’ or ‘good fun, good wine’,” says winery owner Pam Satek, “and we never have figured out which one comes first but they’re both equally important.”
Fun and wine have been joined at the hip at Fremont’s Satek Winery since Larry and Pam Satek opened the place in 2001. Larry’s a retired chemist, Pam a retired school principal who are living their dream, growing grapes and making wine. Great wine it turns out..35 different kinds that have won 250 medals so far in international competitions. Chemist Larry says it’s the unique lower great lakes weather and the deep glacial gravel and sandy loam soils only found in northern Indiana.
“So grapevines that have roots down three to six feet will very often be very happy here,” Larry says, “as opposed to the clay soils that one finds everywhere else.”
The result is fruit of the vine well suited for fine dry red and white wines…fruit wines too, blueberry, blackberry, raspberry and mango..and apple wine sold now at Tincaps games. Satek Winery has become a prime Steuben County tourist destination..on this day they’re setting up for a convention of airstream camper owners, enhancing the local economy. It’s just one of the many reasons the folks in Fremont and Steuben County have solidly embraced this little old winemaker.
“People just come in and are so happy to be here,” Pam says. “They consider it the Steuben County winery and sub-ownership in it and we’re just delighted with that it’s been a lot of fun. Just keeping it growing and positive and as long as people have fun here we will be happy.”
