Joan Rivers Dead At 81

NEW YORK (21Alive) - Legendary comedienne Joan Rivers died Wednesday, her daughter, Melissa Rivers, says.

Joan Rivers was 81 years old. Family surrounded her bedside as she died.

Rivers has been on life support since being she stopped breathing while undergoing vocal cord surgery last Thurs., Aug. 28.

Rivers had her big break by appearing on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1965. She became the first woman to host her own late night talk show in 1986 that competed with Carson, which caused a falling out between the two.

Rivers also appeared in a number of films, television shows and became a gossip queen and talk show on the E! Network.
