ANGOLA, Ind. (21Alive) -- It’s a lovely corner of Steuben County, this side of Jimmerson Lake. Upscale, too, with million dollar homes lining the shore. You’ll spot the occasional humble lake cabin, built before the crowds came. But one by one the historic structures are disappearing on Jimmerson Lake.

The latest victim of progress fell just this week. This was the Corner Landing Bait Shop, since the 1920’s the place to stock up on worms, lures, fishing line, even beer, before heading out on the water to try your luck. And when the fishing was done this is where you came to show off your catch, or moan about that big one that got away. So what kind of reaction did you get from the old timers once they found out the building was going to be replaced?

“Oh, lots of memories,” says store owner Kirk Bowser. “They remember when they were knee high to a grasshopper and came in here, their grandfather brought them in or their father.’

Jim and Linda Krouse live in Fort Wayne but have been coming up here since the 1950’s.

“Just hate to see it go down,” says Linda. “It’s a landmark, changes…it’ll be alright.”

It will be alright, a new Corner Landing will open next spring and look something like this new building next door. It will be clean and efficient and totally lacking the charm of the old place.

“No toilets was one of ‘em,” laughs Kirk. “And no true drinking water inside. No heat. AC was pretty sketchy. Except for that it was perfect? Oh, yea.”

Okay, the old bait store wasn’t ideal, but try to tell that to the hundreds, perhaps thousands of folks whose fondest childhood memories were born in that old blue shack at the corner of Bay View Drive and 300 West, on the shore of lovely Jimmerson Lake. Eric Olson reporting.
