FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) In the past few weeks Indiana’s NewsCenter has brought you stories on better tips for booking your hotel and 13 secrets the hotel won’t tell you. This week we bring you tips on how to stay safe at your hotel.

When traveling to see family and friends this holiday season the last thing you should have to worry about is safety at the hotel where you choose to stay. There are some things that you must keep in mind though during the holiday season.

Certain crooks will attempt what police refer to as crimes of opportunity. They include following you into your hotel room, waiting for you in a poorly lit parking lot and breaking into your car when no one is around. They’re called crimes of opportunity because they are generally high reward, low risk crimes.

When staying at a hotel this holiday season, utilize the hotel. Become acquainted with the person working the front desk. Make sure that they notice when you come and when you go. Use the main entrance to enter and exit the hotel. Side doors may make your life easier for a few minutes, but they are generally not as secure as the main entrance.

When parking your car, as in any situation, lock it. If you go shopping during the day and come back with gifts, take them inside to your room. Don’t leave them in the car. If you need to leave them in your car, lock them in your trunk. Do you have valuables with you or are you going to purchase something of value? Ask the folks at the front desk to store them in a safe for you.

Also park your car as close to the front door as possible. If there aren’t any spots available, try to park under a light. If that option is off of the table, ask a clerk to escort you to and from your car. If you’re staying in a downtown or metropolitan area seek a public parking garage. They’re well lit and in some cases are directly connected to your hotel.

Remember, the hotel employees are trained in providing an atmosphere that resembles home. They are there to help you in every capacity.

Finally, have fun this holiday season. Happy Thanksgiving.
