FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) -- Retailers and other employers are in the thick of their holiday hiring right now, but is it more beneficial to run out your unemployment benefits or take a seasonal position?

The good news is that retail hiring started earlier than normal this year with many positions in shipping and receiving or customer service.

And not only are stores hiring, lots of them are offering longer hours.

The area manager for Manpower says some of those positions could turn into long-term or permanent ones.

He says another thing to keep in mind, is that employers are looking to replace what he calls the less than desirable talent with better talent. That means if you wow your boss, you could get a full-time gig.

And Joel Daas says that chance should motivate people to apply for work.

"It may turn into a permanent position. And if it doesn't turn into a permanent position, it certainly looks good on your resume, that when that opportunity comes that you've been waiting for, you can seize it at that time. So there are definitely benefits to going out there and getting ahead of the game," Daas says.

With unemployment hovering around eight percent or so, there's a lot of competition out there.

Daas says to increase your chances of getting hired, you should be dressed up, go to the store where you'd like to work, and be polite to every one you meet, since you never know who influences hiring decisions.

If the company uses a service for its hiring, it will let you know to apply there.
