INDIANA (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - A new state immigration law is going into effect July first that will make it illegal for employers to knowingly employ unauthorized workers.
Immigration experts from Barnes and Thornburg at the Immigration Reform Development Seminar explained the new law to employers so they know how to comply with the new law.
Mark Kittaka of Barnes and Thornburg says, “We're stressing to companies that they really need to put an immigration compliance policy into place. I mean it involves having the documentation because what we're hearing from the federal government is that if you're going to take action against people who have no match letters you better have a written policy.”
The new law encourages employers to use the "e-verify" system that checks identities and eligibility of new workers.
