INDIANA (Indiana's NewsCenter) - With 12 days until the mid-term elections, the 3rd Congressional District race is heating up.

Tom Hayhurst and Marlin Stutzman have been hitting the campaign trail trying to drum up support for their cause, while pointing out flaws in their opponent’s platform.

The most recent accusation has come from Hayhurst by citing a newspaper article. He says that Stutzman and his family have received subsidies for their family farm operation. During the time that Stutzman has criticized farm subsidies.

Hayhurst believes this issue is important because it speaks to his opponent’s credibility.

Stutzman says the subsidies were mandated to the farmers, and that his family did not apply for the subsidies, the owners of the land that they farmed did.

Hayhurst says, “Mr. Stutzman has said in the most strongest terms, he's opposed to subsidies, we need to get rid of them. He's also said he has to accept them. It's all total nonsense. We've caught him at it. It's a very typical political thing to do."

Stutzman says, “I don't think that there's any real basis for this article and I don't know, I've checked with our USDA office and it's exactly what they've told us for years and years. So i don't think there's any change that's happened in the last couple of years and Dr. Hayhurst is using this as a way to throw more mud.”
