Habitat Snow Village Raises Money

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) – Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity is raising money for its housing initiatives through its annual snow village display.

The Department 56 snow village depicts winter and Christmas themes across more than 100 feet of lighted tables and displays at Glenbrook Square Mall.

It is the second consecutive year the snow village is at Glenbrook Square, and it is the fifth year for the display overall. The event is Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity’s largest. Admission is free with 100 percent of the donations going towards Fort Wayne Habitat’s mission to create housing solutions for Allen County residents.

Laurie Brumbaugh, director of development for Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity, says the average cost to build a Habitat for Humanity home is $60,000. Families that meet requirements for Habitat assistance are provided housing on a 20 year no interest mortgage and must also volunteer 300 hours of their time at Habitat functions like the snow village or building other Habitat homes.

“We’re serving families that are earning below the area median income, so the average Habitat house cost mortgage payment is about $350 - $400 a month,” Brumbaugh says.

Last year, 14,000 visitors donated close to $15,000 to Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity.

Brumbaugh says the goal for 2012 is $20,000.

In the last 26 years, Habitat for Humanity has built 165 homes in the Allen County area, including 13 this year.

The snow village can be seen through Christmas Eve.
