FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- After years of planning, construction begins on Indiana’s largest subdivision built only by Habitat for Humanity.
Fort Wayne's planned front porch community is designed to foster a sense of community with a strict set of standards.
Habitat for Humanity broke ground on a planned 120 home subdivision near the intersection of Cook and Huegenard Roads.
Each homeowner must qualify by income, attend homeownership and financial classes, invest 300 hours of sweat equity into a house, and put $500 down and pay $500 a month for it.
It's Habitat's way of making the dream of homeownership a reality.
And homeowner-to-be Celestine Johnson can't wait to put a permanent roof over her children's heads.
“There's not only going to be a construction on the outside with the house, there's still going to be construction going on the inside of me. And it's going to continue to teach me to appreciate those things that I had to work hard for. And through that, my children reap the benefits. And then people around me who know me, hopefully can give them hope and encourage them and awaken them to even just wanting to apply,” Johnson says.
Fuller's Landing will be built over the next five to seven years, using 25,000 volunteers.
Construction on streets and infrastructure will continue for the next seven months, with the first homeowners moving in mid-summer.
Home ownership is the American Dream and one that may seem unattainable to some, but that's where Habitat for Humanity steps in.

Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity is excited to announce the groundbreaking of its neighborhood Fuller’s Landing – a unique, front-porch community offering affordable homeownership to hardworking families through zero-interest mortgages.
Media and the public are invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony in the 4300 block of West Cook Road Tuesday, August 27 at 1:30 p.m. to kick off development on the first phase of the three-phase, $10 million 120-lot neighborhood. Fuller’s Landing will require support from more than 25,000 volunteers and investment from generous donors throughout the community to see more than 100 families’ dream of homeownership realized over the next 5 to 7 years.
“Shifting from building one home at a time to developing an entire front-porch neighborhood will enable Habitat families to live in an area that provides a safe, stable and united community we will all help build together,” said Justin Berger, Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity’s chief executive officer. “We are excited to bring this model of community-building that has been successful for Habitat affiliates around the country to families here in Fort Wayne.”
Plans for the neighborhood have already garnered generous support and excitement from local government officials, local schools, neighborhood investors, future homeowners and other area partners, who will help turn the first shovels full of dirt on this community-wide effort Tuesday.
Fuller’s Landing will feature new one-, one-and-a-half and two-story home designs with a minimum three bedrooms. The homes will range from 1,200 to 1,800 square feet, with two-car garages and front porches. The neighborhood will also include a community playground and sidewalks throughout.
Habitat homeowners living in Fuller’s Landing will still pay a zero-interest mortgage with 20- to 30-year terms, and typical payments will be around $500 a month, including taxes and insurance.
