JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind. (21Alive) -- An off-duty Greenwood Police Officer was arrested this morning on battery, battery on a police officer, and strangulation charges.

The incident happened during a New Years Eve party, according to responding officers from Johnson County Sheriff's Department and Bargsville Police Department.

When Police arrived, they found Greenwood Police Officer Joey Rodriguez laying on the road bleeding and intoxicated. When officers tried to help Rodriguez into a car he began to punch and kick. Officers said he he managed to punch one officer in the face, another in the nose, and also kicked responding medics.

After investigating the incident, Police said they discovered that Rodriguez became intoxicated during the course of the New Years Eve Party. When other guests asked him leave, he became aggressive and refused to leave. Witnesses also told Officers that he tried to strangle his wife, however, his wife has claimed that to be untrue.

Rodriguez was taken to a local hospital. Authorities are saying that Rodriguez has been suspended for 5 days without pay and is being held on a $150,000 bond.

The Greenwood Police Chief is seeking to discuss further disciplinary action with the Greenwood Police Merit Commission.
