INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) -- Fort Wayne's more restrictive smoking ordinance would not need to be watered down if Indiana passes a new statewide smoking ban in 2012.

The Governor said Tuesday he thinks the evidence has been gathered and public support is behind the idea.

Daniels says there is a difference of opinion over some of the details, but he hopes legislators can bring the parties together in compromise.

He says it's long overdue that Indiana takes this step which many other states have done before.

Any new law will likely be less restrictive than Fort Wayne's current smoking ban in public places.

Daniels favors local control on this issue.
