FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- There's no doubt that the freezing temperatures have taken over our viewing area, so while the temperatures are here to stay, why not use them for a good cause.

The seventh annual polar plunge kicked off Saturday afternoon.

The polar plunge helps raise money for the Special Olympics Allen County and for the state of Indiana.

Because of the freezing temperatures the usual plunge was improvised, it was too cold for participants to jump in the dumpster full of cold water this year.

Instead people utilized the fresh snow and jumped in two smaller kiddy pools filled with ice cold water.

Money raised from the polar plunge helps fund the proceeds for Special Olympics participants in the area.

“Special Olympics is a completely community funded organization. Special Olympics Allen County we brought into the community seven years ago so that our athletes could participate in a program they didn't have to pay to play. So they get to enjoy, sports activities and camaraderie with one another, and not have to worry about the bill of it, and just get to enjoy one another and learn some really great skills and some life skills at that,” Allen County special Olympics event and fundraising coordinator Julia Fiechter said.

City officials from the Fort Wayne fire department, police department, and even Mayor Tom Henry joined the festivities for the good cause.
This year’s plunge raised $19,250.
