FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Strong wind gusts may spread that foul stench that has blanketed parts of our city. Despite the winds, authorities will continue their search today for its source.
"It's awful. It just smells like rotten sewer," exclaimed Tracy Hinen, who was interviewed near the Fort Wayne Airport.
City leaders have done some sniffing of their own but no one knows what “that” smell is.
For two weeks now residents from all four quadrants around the city have been calling in reporting a strange smell in the air.
Meanwhile, Indiana's NewsCenter has received its fair share of emails and phone calls with theories and smell location reports.
"It smells just like a farmer spreading manure. But It has stuck around so long, I don't quite understand why it's still as strong as it was a couple weeks ago," shared Larry Duhamell, as he entered a Waynedale restaurant.
Depending on the wind direction and speed your senses may pick it up all around. This smell has no boundaries.
When city leaders began their investigation they acknowledged the stench but can't figure out themselves exactly where it's coming from.
They do say a couple of factors could be in play.
Our dry summer means low river levels - exposing the bottom of the river to the air, possibly creating some odor.
Also, as temperatures change, retention ponds at the city's pollution control plant can give off gaseous odors.
Fort Wayne Spokesperson Frank Suarez says, “It's one of those things that we will continue to investigate. We have contacted the Allen County Health Department and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and we will have a team of experts continue to look at this for quite a while and hopefully we will be able to find the cause.”
"Well I do smell almost a little bit of ammonia smell. Not sure maybe. I grew up on a farm so it kind of reminds the smell a little bit when I was a child," said David Criswell, who was preparing to fly out of Fort Wayne International Airport.
Since our story at five o'clock, the city has received so many calls they're asking residents to stop calling with leads and tips.
