FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) -- Some city employees will soon see an increase in their paychecks.

Fort Wayne City Council passed five labor contracts, Tuesday night. that have been under the microscope for sometime. The board voted 6 to 1 to give a 1% raise to the utilities and street departments among others unions.

City councilman Tom Smith says, "The administration had negotiated the contracts for a 1% raise. If we didn't give the raise, then we would have no contracts. That puts you in a very tough spot because if you don't give it, then you have to wait another year and you might have to give a 2% raise. So, under those circumstances, Council thought it was best to give the raise and that's what we've done."

Smith said money was already allocated earlier in the city budget for those employees.
