FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) – Spring is quickly approaching, bringing warmer weather and longer days, but it also comes with plenty of rain which increases the risk of floods.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and Indiana State Police are encouraging Hoosiers to take the time during Flood Safety Awareness Week to get ready for potential flooding.

The Department of Homeland Security says all Hoosiers should develop a "family emergency and communication plan" and put together a disaster preparedness kit which includes at least three days of essential items.

Flood Safety Awareness week begins Monday, March 18 and goes through Friday, March 22.
