FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – A flash mob invades Jefferson Pointe mall to spread holiday cheer and promote the $300 gift card giveaway from Preferred Automotive Group.

It's that time of year again where people are busy buying Holiday surprises. But, little did the shoppers at Jefferson Pointe know that they were in for a big surprise.

“In Fort Wayne, I haven’t seen it done yet,” said Jay Leonard, owner of Preferred Auto.

“The spontaneity is the most fun!” said Kristin Pagan, choreographer and owner of K. Monique Dance Studio.

Leonard and Pagan partnered to create a flash mob to the song “Money” by the Beatles, all in the spirit of the Holidays. Leonard said between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Preferred Auto gives away $300 Visa gift cards, a tradition that’s been going on for years.

“Use it for anything you want. Use it for gas, if you need presents, whatever you need,” said Leonard.

Over 50 students, moms and dads, participated in the flash mob. The flash mob was to promote the gift card giveaway. The dance was recorded will be used in the commercial. Leonard hopes the stunt will get exposure.

“Doing this flash mob and putting it on the commercial, maybe it will go viral,” Leonard said.

First was rehearsal. Pagan said over the span of a month, it only took three to four hours of preparation. Pagan video recorded the dance and song and posted it online so people could watch and practice at home. But Pagan said the hardest part was finding people who were willing to do it. “Getting people to participate is probably the hardest thing.”

Showtime was precisely at 2:15 Sunday afternoon in front of the big Christmas tree in the middle of the mall. Indiana’s NewsCenter and INSight’s Emily Henry, were in on the secret and shot a mock interview with Leonard. That was the que.

Shoppers watched and recorded cell phone videos of the flash mob. By the end, everyone was smiling and clapping with delight. Most of the participants said they were excited, but one little girl said she was “a little nervous”.

Another girl said, “It felt really good and it was really fun.” A third girl said this wasn’t her first flash mob, but she was excited because of the large turnout. “This was really interesting and we had a really good turn-out. It was great!” she said.

“I’m pumped up!” Leonard said.

“It’s something different, kind of spiced things up.” Pagan said. “I’m sure it was a check mark on a lot of people’s bucket list.”
