ROME CITY, Ind. (21Alive) -- The annual Chautauqua Days Festival, which celebrates the life of Gene Stratton-Porter, Indiana's most widely read female author, will take place from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17 and Sunday, Aug. 18 at the Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site. This year's festival will have special meaning as it coincides with Stratton-Porter's 150th birthday.

"Chautauqua Days is an annual celebration honoring our namesake Gene and things that were common during the time she lived in Indiana. To celebrate her 150th birthday during the festival, we are hosting a series of exciting events including a parade, birthday cake, old-fashioned crafts, children's activities and live bluegrass music, to name a few," said Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site Manager Dave Fox. "We are asking everyone to come out to celebrate this special year.

Saturday's events include a special breakfast, hosted by the City, from 7 to 9 a.m. at American Legion Post 381, located at 611 Kelly Street. Residents will be treated to a parade at 10 a.m. through Rome City. Following the parade, the Miami Nation of Indiana will host a drumming circle to signal the official opening of the festival.

"We are excited to have the Rome City Lions Club this year cooking and serving up tasty pork burgers while offering boat rides on Sylvan Lake," added Fox. A wing cook-off will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. with an awards presentation following the event. A special Lyrics in the Park program will close out the evening at 7 p.m. at Lakeside Park. Sunday's events include presenters covering topics from themed gardening and "living off the land," to a local bird rescue group.

Admission is $3 per person (free to children ages 4 and under) and includes all activities at the Historic Site with the exception of Cabin tours. For more information, please call 260.854.3790.
