FREMONT, Ind. (21Alive) -- A 13-year-old boy died in a house fire in Steuben County.

Augustus "Gus" Larson, 13, was an 8th grade student at Fremont Middle School. The coroner said the boy succumbed to smoke inhalation and the death is being ruled as accidental.

Officials with the Steuben County Sheriff's Department say the blaze sparked just before midnight Thursday in the 6000 block of East County Road 500.

Fire crews found a home engulfed in flames with occupants standing outside. One of them told firefighters that there was another occupant still trapped in the home. Firefighters tried to rescue the individual but the fire was "too involved" for them to enter the home.

The fire took about an hour to put under control with several departments assisting.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
