FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) --- Turning to God for an end to the killings.

One Fort Wayne pastor is committing to a path of sacrifice and suffering to try and usher in a divine solution to the community's recent violence problems.

The Reverend Bill McGill says he intends to survive on a diet of water only for the next forty days, hoping to convince God to intervene in the situation.

2013 has been marked by a rash of robberies, shootings, and homicides, putting Fort Wayne on pace for its most violent year on record.

McGill, who shepherds Imani Baptist Temple on Indiana Avenue, felt a calling to fast and pray for an end to the crime wave.

He acknowledges he would like to see lawmakers approve tougher background checks on gun sales, and that moving some police resources around might make a difference too, but he says his focus is to keep driving in the spiritual lane.

" Every faith tradition somehow pre-supposes that there is a God that can operate and orchestrate outside of other vehicles and so that's what I'm really hoping is going to happen here, and make those political and social entities jobs a lot easier," said McGill, who will be observing the fast through May 19th.

That’s when the Christian faith celebrates the Day of Pentecost, when the Biblical record says power was deposited on The Church.

McGill says he's been receiving texts from members of his congregation who are encouraging him, but also are saying they too will be a part of the fasting, if for only a portion of the forty days to come.

The reverend says his doctor will monitor how he's doing, and may order that he take some kind of liquid supplement to boost his health through the rigorous time of denying his body full nutrition.
