Fort Wayne, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - Highway motorist were asked to avoid traveling north along I-69 early Wednesday morning due to an industrial accident near Dupont Road.

A beam malfunction at the construction site on I-69 at the exit ramp of Union Chapel closed the northbound lane early Wednesday morning.

Just after 12:30 a.m. constructions crews were lifting the fourth I-beam into place when the straps used for hoisting broke at one end causing the beam to fall onto the interstate below. During the beams decent to the ground it struck and damaged the third beam which was already in position. Both beams will now have to be replaced.

Fortunately, traffic had been stopped for the work so no one was hurt when the strap holding the beam broke.

Northbound traffic on I-69, north of the Dupont Road exit, was re-routed for more than five hours while crews removed the debris from the interstate.

A total of 11 beams will be used during the construction of the new exit ramp.
