Fort Wayne, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) – Saturday a community came together to remember a fallen hero.
Washington Township Firefighter Mark Haudenschild, II died Sunday night while responding to a fire. He was killed when the tanker truck he was driving rolled over.
26-year-old Haudenschild leaves behind a wife, 3-year-old son and 1-year-old daughter.
"The thing I think I'm the most proud of him for is, a father. There is nothing in his life that meant more to him than his wife and his two children,” said Mark Haudenschild, Mark’s father.
Saturday hundreds of his friends, family members and fellow first responders gathered to pay their respects to Mark at a service held at The Chapel in Fort Wayne.
"I don't even think he knew about all of you because I heard nothing like this has happened since before he was born. I don't think he had any idea of how you would all come together for him, and I just thank you again,” said Mark’s father.
Haudenschild is a man who paid the ultimate sacrifice to help others and the outpouring support from not just his community but many other nearby communities shows just how much this fallen hero means to them.
"Mark is my brother, Mark is Washington Fire Department's brother, Mark is our brother. Today Janet (Mark’s wife), we are your brothers,” said Chief Brian Gillett, Washington Township Fire Department.
Many who knew Mark told of the good times they've had together. His grandmother talked of how Mark's faith is helping her cope.
"Mark's in a much better place than where we are and I can tell you right now there's a big party going on in heaven,” said Mark’s grandmother.
A man that risked his life for others is honored by a community and a brotherhood that calls him their hero.
The service was followed by a ceremony at Riverview Cemetary, including all the the honors presented to those who have died in the line of duty.
