FORT WAYNE, IN (Indiana's NewsCenter) --- People are understandably nervous about eating eggs right now, but the President of the Indiana Restaurant Association says there's no reason to let the problem keep you from dining out.
John Livengood with the restaurant association says several steps have been taken to ensure patrons are safe.
At least 2,000 people have gotten sick and a half billion eggs have been recalled because of Salmonella traced back to a couple of Iowa farms.
Livengood says not only have advisories gone out about the egg recall, but that businesses have also gotten reminders about proper food handling practices, including proper refrigeration, avoiding use of raw eggs, and that using pasteurized products is best.
Pasteurization involves cracking eggs open, then running them through a process similar to what’s done with milk at dairies, before they are re-packaged and sent to stores.
The Allen County Health Department says it's doing more spot checks of restaurants right now, and that patrons would be wise to question restaurants that they visit.
Director Dawn McDevitt/Allen Co. Health Dept. Food Protection: " I think that all the restaurants would like their patrons to feel at ease that way. The other thing a patron can do is they can look at what products they're ordering. It might not be the best time to order your eggs 'over easy', so patrons can take a little bit of responsibility on their own."
