NEW HAVEN, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) – East Allen County Schools officials announce a new Superintendent, and Board Members must decide which schools will qualify for Title I.

East Allen school officials announced they have superintendent Tuesday night. There are little details at this time, but EACS officials plan to hold a press conference Wednesday at 11 a.m. at their administrative building. We will bring you the latest details on 21 Alive.

In other happenings at the EACS school board meeting, board members are faced with the difficult task of deciding which schools should qualify for funding when it comes to poverty levels, a grant called Title I. Title I is a federal grant given to schools where at least 75 percent of the student population is in poverty. In Indiana, schools that were given a grade of "D” also automatically qualify for the grant.

Board Secretary, Rev. Stephen L. Terry says two schools fall in that category in EACS district, and three schools are already classified as Title I, with an 80 to 90 percent poverty rate.

Terry says it was recommended that the board expand the title to ten schools, but EACS district will only be granted $2.8M that they'll have to divide among the schools. With the application deadline on June 30, and some teacher jobs potentially on the line, the school board is pressed to make a decision.

"What really has to happen more than anything, is the money following the students, that's the mandate. But we need to make sure what we're doing in our budget, that's the next meeting coming up, that we're servicing the student who have great needs,” said Terry.

Terry says although ten schools are in the running, the board will probably choose only five or six. He says the needs of other schools will fall under the budget. The board and Title I teachers will discuss the matter in a meeting Wednesday morning with the new superintendent, who will also be announced Wednesday.
