FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) -- In lieu of flowers, Bishop D'Arcy preferred people make donations to causes near and dear to his heart.

In official paperwork from the diocese, Bishop D'Arcy outlined eight of his beloved organizations that he hoped people would make contributions to continue their good work in the community.

One of those is the Christ Child Society chapter that he helped establish in 1997.

The women provide layettes to new moms in the hospital that include essentials like clothes, diapers and bottles.

The society also runs three Crib Clubs in Fort Wayne, where expectant and new moms who complete classes in self-sufficiency, parenting and health can earn coupons to shop for items they need.

"These were things that he belived in so strongly. And when he tells you, 'Dee Dee, it's a way of helping souls and helping people gain eternal life in heaven.' So how can you say no to something like that?" He was a blessing. He was a gift from God to come to this diocese, because he worked so hard for the common good of everyone," says Dee Dee Dahm of the Christ Child Society.

It's just one of several organizations Bishop D'Arcy was passionate about supporting.

"It's a tremendous need and it's growing all the time. We give out anywhere from 6, 7, 800 layettes in the last few years because of the economy and different things. And children who are removed from their homes because of crisis situations, they can have a backpack with personal belongings and everybody has a teddy bear, up to a 12 year old boy. Something that it's theirs that they can take to the foster home that they're staying in until they're placed," says Dahm.

Some of the other organizations Bishop D'Arcy favored are the priests' pension and seminary education funds, the Bishop D'Arcy catholic education fund, and any of the four catholic high schools in the diocese.
