Delph In Twitter War Over Gay Marriage

February 14, 2014 Updated Feb 14, 2014 at 11:59 AM EST

INDIANAPOLIS (RTV6) -- Indiana State Sen. Mike Delph, R-Carmel, engaged in a war of tweets late Thursday and early Friday, venting his frustration over a Senate move that delayed a statewide vote on a gay marriage ban for at least two years.

Delph championed the ban, which included language that would also bar civil unions. The House took the civil union language out of the amendment. The Senate then decided not to restore that language.

The marriage ban could still pass in the Senate in a vote on Monday, but it can't be put before the voters this fall.

Delph lashed out at members of his own party, the media and the "self absorbed Godless culture that is fast tracking our nation to ruin."

A stream of tweets from Delph's account began Thursday night and continued early Friday morning, with name-calling and vitriol highlighting the discussion.

Detractors called out what they consider to be Delph's intolerance.

Delph said he spoke up because "many conservatives are tired of liberal to moderate GOP leadership," a shot at his colleagues who pulled the civil union language out of the amendment.

He also took the opportunity to call out The Indianapolis Star.

"Please write about your blatant anti Christian advocacy," Delph tweeted. "You all should have to register as lobbyists for HJR3."

Delph declined interview requests Friday but tweeted that he will make an announcement Monday morning "that you won't want to miss."
