FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – A major warehouse superstore could soon be coming to the Summit City.

The Fort Wayne Plan Commission confirmed to Indiana’s NewsCenter Thursday afternoon that Costco filed an application Wednesday to build a store here in Fort Wayne.

According to the application, contractors are interested in building on a parcel of land on the site of the old Seyfert's Potato Chip plant, just down the street from Sam’s Club on I-69 and Lima Road. Kelley’s Chevrolet is also planning on moving their dealership on E. State Blvd. to a parcel of land next to Costco.

Costco sells everything from groceries, to jewelry, to furniture and computers. The warehouse store is a staple on the west coast and is expanding. The nearest Costco store to Fort Wayne is in Toledo, with locations in Indianapolis as well.

Since the warehouse superstore is a multi-billion dollar retailer and will surely give other superstores like Meijer, Sam's Club, and Walmart some competition. Indiana’s NewsCenter went out and asked Fort Wayne shoppers what they think of the news.

“More competition can't hurt,” said Hugo of Fort Wayne. “Plus it's a new business, more jobs. I don't see any downside to it.”

“I've been waiting,” said Marie Plimpton. “Most of our friends go to Costco in other cities, and I've just been hoping that one would open up in Fort Wayne.”

“I’m for it. It always keeps everybody in line,” said Darralyne Matiya with a laugh. “More competition keeps the prices low,” said her husband, Tom.

“I like Sam's Club,” said Elethia of Fort Wayne. “I'll probably still come here.”

Although the application looks promising, nothing is definite. Costco’s application still needs to be approved by the Fort Wayne Plan Commission at their Sept. 10 meeting.
