FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) - It was a sweet honor Friday night for a local girl battling cancer.
Concordia Lutheran High School honored Aleigha Sweet, 11, of Fort Wayne, as 2013 Homecoming Princess.
Aleigha has battled cancer three times during her childhood. She was most recently diagnosed this summer, just short of her five years cancer-free anniversary. Aleigha started chemotherapy Sept. 4, but was excited to be a part of Concordia's homecoming festivities.
"It's awesome! I'm really happy," Aleigha says.
Aleigha, a Bloomingdale Elementary School student, has teamed up with Concordia students to organize the St. Baldrick's fundraiser to raise money, donate hair for wigs and shave heads in support of the fight against cancer.
Fans in the stands modified the school's familiar, "I Believe That We Will Win" to "I Believe That She Will Win."
Aleigha was introduced at halftime of the homecoming game, given a crown and bouquet of flowers and a night of memories.
"I'll probably wear it around all weekend," Aleigha says of her princess crown.
All week long, the Concordia student body and staff has emphasized Aleigha's battle and included her in many of the events.
