FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- Sometimes the best gifts in life are free. For the Community Harvest Food Bank a $10,000 donation came from the American Legion Post 241 in Waynedale on Thursday.

“Along with the $10,000 to Community Harvest each church in Waynedale was given $1,000," Ken Holloway, Commander of Post 241 said. "American Legion Post’s are required to give annual donations to non-profits and we always want to see the funds go locally rather than out of state. There’s more of a benefit if the funding stays right here in the area.”

Post 241 has already given $18,000 of donations for the month of December to other services.

“Community Harvest Food Bank and those we serve are so thankful and appreciative of this incredibly generous donation from the American Legion Post 241 in Waynedale," Jane Avery, Community Harvest's Executive Director said. "Post 241 has been so supportive of our mission over the years and that type of faithful generosity allows us to help our neighbors in need, especially those who have no other type of social safety net because they are those known as "the working poor." My late uncle, Robert Avery, was a Post Commander years ago and this donation would make him very happy. Thank you all so very much!”

The Community Harvest Food Bank is the largest organization in northeastern Indiana and serves 21,000 people weekly while also distributing nearly 13 million pounds of food annually.

For the 2013 holiday season, the food bank helped serve more than 10,000 families.
