FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - This area's largest food bank could use a lifeline right now, in the form of donations to fill empty warehouse shelves.

The director of development for Community Harvest Food Bank says the depleted supply of food in that agency's Fort Wayne warehouse represents the worst situation she's seen in at least 11 years.

The food bank typically has about one million pounds of food items packed on its warehouse racks.

Right now, it's more like 250,000 pounds, one-fourth the norm.

The agency is running low on needed healthy foods like canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter and tuna.

One aisle we walked down was filled with boxes of pretzels, a product that’s not priority one for a struggling food bank.

We asked Rebecca Aurand, Director of Development for Community Harvest Food Bank, for her assessment of the inventory.

Rebecca Aurand/Community Harvest Food Bank: " The place should be packed with food, but right now we have a lot of snack foods, we have a lot of government commodities, barrels for collections. Unfortunately there’s nothing in those barrels."

The food item numbers are way down, at a time when need for assistance is way up.

About 460 pantries in Northeast Indiana are supplied food by Community Harvest’s warehouse in South Fort Wayne.
