ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - City and county leaders announced a joint plan, Monday, that's geared toward making it easier for companies to acquire permits.
Officials said smaller projects are approved within 24 hours but larger projects do take longer.
19 different departments are involved with the land use permit process.
They say the improvements will make it much easier on businesses, with changes that include new online technology, legislative streamlining and better customer service.
Mayor Tom Henry says, “It was too difficult to do business in the city of Fort Wayne and the county of Allen because of a lengthy permitting process.”
Allen County Commissioner Nelson Peters said, "The issues, I think are the size of the project as much as anything, so it's the big commercial and industrial projects that sometimes hang us up.”
City Council and County Council will each be asked to contribute $700,000 to implement the new changes.
The permits targeted account for almost $300 million in annual investments.
