Man Drowns In St. Mary's River (VIDEO & PHOTOS)

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) -- Indiana Conservation Officers, Fort Wayne Police and Fire Departments, and Allen County Deputies are investigating a fatal drowning near the Main Street Bridge Monday.

According to the Department of Natural Resources, the 52-year-old man died at 10:30 p.m. Monday night. The Allen County Coroner's Office has announced that the cause was accidental asphyxia due to drowning. The man has been identified but his name has not been released pending notification of the family.

At approximately 3:05 p.m. witnesses called 911, reporting a man in the water near the Carole Lombard Memorial Bridge in Fort Wayne. Fort Wayne Dive Team members were able to recover the victim from the river at approximately 3:26 and he was transported to St Joseph Hospital in Ft. Wayne by Three Rivers Ambulance Authority.

At the time of transport the victim was not breathing and had no pulse however paramedics and medical teams were able to revive him. He is currently in critical condition at St. Joseph Hospital.

The incident is currently under investigation by Indiana Conservation Officer Andrew Harmon.

Indiana Conservation Officers want to remind residents the dangers of rapidly moving cold water. All individuals near water should have access to life jackets. Children should not be allowed near water without proper supervision by a parent or adult guardian.
