FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Bob Morris has won the Republican Party's support in the race for Northeast Indiana's 84th District state legislative seat.
The party's third caucus to replace a nominee since the May primaries took place in downtown Fort Wayne at Allen County Republican Headquarters Saturday morning around 10:00 a.m. In less than two hours and after three rounds of voting, the 41 precinct committee people had reached the necessary majority vote needed to chose a nominee.
Allen County Commissioner Bill Brown was eliminated after the first round. District Office Director Derek Pillie was out after the second round. Morris beat out former Fort Wayne Community School Board member Jon Olinger during the final round.
"It's been a great experience to meet everyone in the district," says Morris. "I knocked on every door, I got a lot of support from people, and I look forward to serving the people in the 84th district."
Morris, a local business owner, will serve out the last four months of Fort Wayne Representative Randy Borror's legislative term. One candidate could have been picked to finish out Borror's term and another to run in November. But Saturday the precinct members voted for Morris to fill both vacancies.
Borror recently resigned to take a lobbying position at Bose Public Affairs Group. That announcement came after his attempt to seize Mark Souder's congressional seat also failed.
"Caucuses happen and people change their heart, and when they are done serving they do resign," says Morris. "I think we'll be strong with the support that I have from the fellow precinct people as well as the fellow people who are voters. Everyone has been telling me along the way, 'I will vote for you in November.' So, as I won the seat here today and won the nomination, I'm hoping and praying that those people will vote for me."
Morris will be up against Democratic nominee Evan Smith for the 84th House District in November's election.
