Before You Donate To Earthquake Relief

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – The BBB and the Indiana Attorney General’s office are reminding Hoosiers when donating to earthquake/Tsunami relief to donate to reputable charities.

In situations such as large natural disasters, there are unscrupulous people who will attempt to take advantage of the public’s desire to help victims.

There are several ways you can protect yourself when donating:

--visit www.bbb.org/charity to research organizations you are considering supporting
--visit www.CharityNavigator.org to check whether a charity uses donations for intended purposes.

In addition to thoroughly checking out the organization before donating, ask for written information about the charity’s programs and what they intend to do with any excess contributions.

Make sure your contribution is tax deductible: donations should be made to charitable organizations that are tax exempt.

If you are donating online, make sure the website is secure—look for “https” on their website.
