FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – More than 50 car accidents happened in Allen County Saturday due to the slick and icy road conditions, according to Allen County Dispatch.

A five-car pile-up happened on the bridge on Spy Run Avenue near the Old Fort Saturday afternoon.

Initial reports indicate a black pick-up truck slid on the icy roads, spun, and ran into the curb breaking its tire axle. That caused a domino effect of cars to crash behind it.

Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) recommends that drivers slow down and use caution while driving in snowy and icy conditions. INDOT also advises drivers to travel below the speed limit, as well as to stay alert and eliminate distractions—that means no texting and driving.

Drivers should leave plenty of space between themselves and the car in front of them while driving, and be cautious of black ice, as it tends to form on ramps and bridges first causing extremely slick conditions.
