FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – A couple dozen peace activists rallied on the Allen County Courthouse green protesting the possibility of U.S. military action in Syria.

The activist group Fort Wayne for Peace has been rallying together since 2002, against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

On Saturday, they said their stance on Syria is no different—that there should be no war, no bombs, and no violence.

One of the activists says the use of weapons against the Syrian regime won't solve anything, and in fact, could make matters worse.

"This is a foolish use of military force, and if its truly needed then it should be an international coalition. If everyone is so for this I don't know why we stand alone so often and foot the bill for it,” said Tim Tiernon with Fort Wayne for Peace.

But while the protestors are rallying against military action in Syria, a local physician, who was born and raised in Syria but has been living in Fort Wayne for the past 14 years, says he supports actions against his home country.

Dr. Ghanem, a pulmonologist, says stopping Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad's dictatorship should be an international agreement among nations.

“I'm really appreciative of the United States' position on this. Even the United States didn't want to go into another war, I mean because of their experience with the Terror War they had before, but when it comes to the point that we are using chemical weapons against the children we have to give a message to the dictatorship with these chemical weapons that they have to stop doing it,” he said.

Dr. Ghanem says he believes Al-Assad views the Syrian people as bugs or insects—not humans. For that, he says President Obama has made the right decision because he believes Al-Assad will never negotiate a peaceful agreement otherwise.
