PORTLAND, Ind. (www.wthr.com) - A 4-year-old Portland girl is in critical condition after being accidentally shot by her 8-year-old brother.
The Jay County Sheriff's Department says the boy was shooting a .22 caliber rifle at a target Sunday night near where his family was sitting around a campfire in the 5600 block of S. 300 W.
During the target practice, police say Madison Dyer walked into the path of the shooting area, and was hit by a bullet in the head.
Madison was flown to a Fort Wayne hospital.
Police say the shooting was unintentional, but is still under investigation by the Jay County Sheriff's Department and Indiana Department of Child Services.
