AVILLA, Ind. (21Alive) -- At Avilla’s Sacred Heart Home a long life is being very well lived.

“I’ve been working at something all my life,” says Ollie Roberts. “I’ve worked in a restaurant I’ve worked in a hospital…I like to work with other people and show ‘em what’s what and what’s not!”

Ollie Roberts has been showing folks what’s what for 107 years now. Teddy Roosevelt was president and the 1906 San Francisco earthquake hadn’t happened yet when Ollie’s mother gave birth to her on a hardscrabble farm in Hardin County Kentucky.

“We had our own horses,” Ollie recalls, “our own cows own chickens and everything and we put up stuff in summer for the winter. Was it a good life? Yeh, only life I’ve known.”

Ollie Roberts was the eldest of six children, she’s the only one living now but she has lots of other relatives, a son and daughter…there they are with Ollie on her 100th birthday..and dozens of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. And at 107 she’s always busy, on this day sewing pieces of a quilt for a friend. She learned quilting as a little girl from her grandmother who was born during the Civil War.

“When I do my work I do it and do it right. That’s what I tell the girls in here, do your work and do it right. Anybody ask me about living a long life I’ll say be good to everybody treat ‘em right and do what you can to live a happy life. When God gets ready he’ll take us on. A lot of people think when they die if they’re Christian that they go on to Heaven. No. You got to everybody stand before God for the Judgment. If you don’t he’ll say ‘Depart from me, I never knew you’”.

We don’t think God will be saying that to Ollie Roberts even though He’s waited a long time to call her to Him. In two months Ollie will turn 108. It will be a day like countless others in her life, with lots of family and friends around her…and work to do, something to accomplish. It’s keeping her young at heart, out in 21 Country. This is Eric Olson reporting.
