BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (21Alive) - An Indiana University student was critically injured Thursday in a bicycle crash during practice for the Little 500.
Lauren Gill, 23, of South Bend, Ind., was riding with the IU Nursing Cycling Team when she flipped on her bike and landed on her head an shoulders.
Teammates say Gill collided with another cyclist who had suddenly slowed down, leaving Gill unable to avoid the crash.
Gill was flown from Bloomington to an Indianapolis hospital.
The Little 500--scheduled for Fri., Apr. 25 & Sat., Apr. 26--is a series of bike races featuring student organizations in men's race and women's race. Little 500 was first run in 1951, and is the basis of the 1979 film, Breaking Away. An estimated 25,000 people will pack IU's Armstrong Stadium for the races.
