FORT HOOD, Texas (21Alive) - A gunman opened fire Wednesday night at Fort Hood military base, killing 3 people and wounding 16 others.

Military officials say Army Spc. Ivan Lopez, 34, shot multiple fellow soldiers at two separate buildings in one of the largest U.S. bases in America.

Lopez was dressed in Army fatigues, and wielded a semi-automatic firearm.

Lopez was confronted by Military Police officer in a parking lot, at which time Lopez shot and killed himself, Lt. Gen. Mark Milley said at a Wednesday night press conference.

"We're heartbroken that something like this might have happened again," President Barack Obama said in a statement Wednesday night. "I don't what on the comment on facts until we know exactly what happened. But just for now I would hope that everyone across the country keep the families of Fort Hood in our thoughts and our prayer."

Milley says Lopez, who served a four-month tour of duty in Iraq in 2011, was being medicated for mental health issues and being evaluated for a possible diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Lopez has a wife and children who live near the base in central Texas.

The attack comes nearly 4½ years after U.S. Army Major Nidal Hasan shot and killed 13 people at Fort Hood,

Hasan was convicted of murder and attempted murder, and awaits the death penalty.
