GiaQuinta Displeased With State's ISTEP+ Assessment Review

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) - Weeks after the Fort Wayne Community Schools board voted to no longer recognize the state's A-F grading assessment on schools, one trustee is seeking more answers from the company that administered the test.

Last month, an Indiana Department of Education says a review from Richard Hill, Ph.D., and the National Center for the Improvement of Educational Assessment found no measurable impact of disruptions from computer glitches during the spring ISTEP+ examinations.

FWCS board president Mark GiaQuinta expressed concerns at Monday night's board meeting, saying he asked the Indiana Department of Education to release scores of FWCS students to make certain it had no affect locally.

"I asked our superintendent (Wendy Robinson, Ed.D.) the day his report came out to ask for our scores; and she did," GiaQuinta says. "They were not available. I waited about two weeks, and then I asked personally, and was told, 'Well, maybe they'll be released today or tomorrow.' That was a a couple weeks ago."

An interactive map published as part of the NCIEA's findings reports 17 percent of tested students were interrupted in Fort Wayne Community Schools. Sixteen percent of students were affected during the math portion of the tests.

GiaQuinta says he is not certain why the Indiana Department of Education will not release the district's scores.

"What we need now is some candor," GiaQuinta adds. "An admission that our test scores have not been tabulated and were not a part of that conclusion."

Since Fort Wayne Community Schools board disavowed the A-F school assessments, GiaQuinta says other school boards around the state have made similar resolutions to follow suit
