INDIANAPOLIS (21Alive) - A Fort Wayne charter school was given for probationary membership into the Indiana High School Athletic Committee on Friday.
Smith Academy for Excellence is one of three charter schools approved by the IHSAA Executive Committee.
SAFE is allowed to compete immediately, but are ineligible for IHSAA postseason play for four years.
The charter schools must also maintain IHSAA rules and regulations, field at least one boys team and one girls team in both the fall and spring seasons, and attend seasonal meetings and orientations.
SAFE will be reviewed for full membership in June 2017.
Indianapolis Lighthouse Charter and Indianapolis Providence Cristo Rey are the other two charter schools given probationary approval.
