OSSIAN, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) - Eight area high schools will form a new athletics conference in the 2015-16 school year.
Leo, Huntington North, Bellmont, Columbia City, DeKalb, East Noble, New Haven and Norwell will compete in a yet to be named league, Norwell principal Mark Misch announced in a statement Thursday.
Misch says the conference formed after presentations and discussions from member schools last week.
Criteria for the new conference included academics, location, demographics and competition, the release says.
In April, the Northeast Hoosier Conference announced it would disband in 2015, leaving its eight schools looking for new destinations. The increasing size of Homestead High School and Carroll High School was cause for concern for the six other schools.
Those six schools have been working together since the NHC's decision to split, according to the new conference announcement.
Leo will leave the Allen County Athletic Conference and Huntington North will leave the North Central Conference in the realignment.
The ACAC lost Garrett High School to the North East Corner Conference in early May. The ACAC added Jay County High School in April.
The 2015-16 timetable allows the NHC to disband July 1, 2015, in accordance with NHC bylaws.
