NEW HAVEN, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) - Tomorrow's business leaders got a first-hand look at different jobs Tuesday morning.
Third grade students at Meadowbrook Elementary School participated in Junior Achievement of Northern Indiana's Career Exploration Day.
The annual series of presentations allows students to learn about different occupations, companies and the challenges and success of everyday work.
"It starts now with what they're doing in the classroom," Marcia Edmond, Meadowbrook Elementary School guidance counselor says. "Then, it goes beyond that; because there is additional education that is required for many of these jobs. Also, it gives us an opportunity to build relationships with the community."
Representatives from the Indiana State Police, New Haven-Adams Township Fire Department, Arts United, Vanilla Bean coffee shop, Curves for Women, Northeast Indiana Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital and 21Alive spoke to three different classes.
21Alive news assignment editor Eric Dutkiewicz taught the students about different roles in at a television station, and let the children star in their very own classroom newscasts.
"Our top story today is the lunch menu," a student reads from an anchor's script. "We go live to the cafeteria for this report." The newscast includes student actors pretending to be reporters, weather specialists, sportscasters and camera operators.
"This is a great opportunity for the kids to not only learn about different jobs, but to learn what perks their interests," Dutkiewicz says. "It all started for me in a TV class at Blackhawk Middle School. I really think that's the reason I'm where I am today."
Junior Achievement is a business education program for students of all grade levels. The organization uses real-life examples situations to promoted economic literacy and personal finance skills. To become a JA volunteer, click here.
