INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (www.theindychannel.com) -- A 1-year-old girl was fatally struck by a van Sunday evening, police said.
Investigators said about 6 p.m., the girl darted behind a green van in the 3200 block of West Michigan Street.
Police said Ondina Villanueva, 41, of Indianapolis, was driving the van. She told police she was visiting a friend just before the incident. When she began to back up her van, police said witnesses yelled for her to stop, but Villanueva said she did not hear them.
She continued to back up the van, striking Makenzie Campos, police said.
Neighbors said the girl had been playing just minutes before the accident.
"We was just out there earlier and the baby was playing with my dog, and 15 minutes later she’s run over by a car," said neighbor Billy Tew.
Tew said the baby was good at walking.
"She walked real good, yeah, kind of fast, but I can’t believe she got out in front of that van that quick," he said.
Another neighbor said there was nothing emergency crews could have done to save the girl.
"I went to the baby," the neighbor said. "I knew the baby was dead when I seen her, because she was lifeless."
Investigators said Villanueva stayed on the scene and cooperated with police. According to the police report, no arrests were made.
