Huntington, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - Once cancer survivors have beaten the disease they're advised to keep going to regular check ups.

Indiana's NewsCenter Assignment Manager, Nicole Hahn is already a survivor of cervical cancer but breast cancer also runs in her family.

She recently found a lump in her breast. Now she's working to make sure her first battle with cancer will be her last.

“It's definitely frightening, something to go through especially after you've already been though cancer to hear that you might have it," said Hahn.

Nicole knew something was wrong. She told doctors she could feel a lump, so that's when they scheduled her for a mammogram.

“We had seen on her mammogram that she did have some areas of concern, they were actually nodules that you could see on the mammogram," said Radiology Technologist, Maureen Halstead.

"It didn't take her long and she knew immediately that we had to come over to this room," said Hahn.

An abnormal mammogram is followed by an ultrasound. This gives doctors a better idea of what they're dealing with.

"It actually helps make a definitive or a little bit better diagnosis. Are we dealing with something that is very simple, such as a cyst which is a fluid collection, or a majority of the time it is a what we call is a fibro niamoa," says Maureen.

So far everything doctors have biopsied has been benign. That means Nicole does not have breast cancer. But they still have to keep a close eye on what is benign to make sure it doesn't grow.

Nicole says this can be stressful; the most important thing is making sure you trust those who are treating you.

"It's much easier when you have someone like Maureen and you have someone with you who is supportive and can explain things, to know what you're doing and what you're going through," says Nicole.

Nicole’s advice for other women who are going through this all for the first time is to not be afriad to ask questions.
