FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - "He's a wonderful big brother, and he's always there to help someone out."

That's part of the nomination for the recipient of this month's "The Extra Mile" recognition.

Tammi Wallace is so proud of older brother, Glenn Ellenberger.

They grew up in Waynedale, and she's in awe of him.

Why?

Because when Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, Glenn, his family and a group of volunteers headed to New Orleans.

Because the area realtor founded a charity called "Deeds of Compassion" to help financially-strapped residents keep their homes.

And because Glenn and volunteers saved the Prairie Grove Cemetery chapel along Old Trail road after vandals nearly burned the pre-Civil War-era structure to the ground.

Glenn and his group fixed $80,000 in damage with only $30,000 from insurance.

The church bell still rings... the lights, still on.

Glenn and Tammi's late mother suggested that Glenn get to work!

Glenn Ellenberger says, "I thought it would be a fun project.
I would have hated to see the chapel be demolished and be gone.
It's just always been there.
It was burned clear through.
The back wall was burned through. You could stand inside and look out, and several of the windows on the south side were burned out."

Tammi Wallace says, "Oh, he's wonderful! He's there for whatever you need. He's the guy to call."

Glenn Ellenberger added, "The board of realtors has been real active in helping us with it and made donations to it, and several realtors have been here, so it's been a community-wide project."

The next project for repair? The outhouse that was built with the chapel.

By the way, the chapel hosts Christmas services every year and can be rented for weddings and for other special events.
