LEO, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) -- A Leo Elementary School teacher says supporting her students even when they're not in her classroom is the key to a successful education.

Brooke Griffith, the nominating student says, "She calls us her kids and attends our sports events even on weekends. She is willing to help students after school. It is exciting to come to school because she makes learning fun. She is the nicest person i've ever met and is also a great friend."

Brigitte Emrick has been teaching for 17 years - all of them in the East Allen County School District. She was visibly touched by nominating student Brooke Griffith's letter and says it highlights her belief that being a teacher is much more than just working with students in the classroom.

Emrick says, "So, I'll go to their soccer games or football games, or whatever, take my dog with me so they can see him. I do,I feel like if I'm out there showing that I'm supporting them with other things that they do outside of school that, you know, you build that relationship with them and then, that, in turn, makes them even want to do better in school."

Ms. Emrick said she followed her heart when deciding to become a teacher. Years ago, her father told her to pick a profession that she would always love.

"It's not about the money," says Emrick, "it's about loving your job and going to it and enjoying your job everyday and I have to say, there's nothing else I'd rather do."

Many thanks to the companies sponsoring the Golden Apple Award: Bradley Gough Diamonds gave Ms. Emrick a Golden Apple pin, Vorderman Volkswagen gave her a free car detailing and Afdent presented her with a free Brite Smile service.
