FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - “My teacher, Mrs. Waning, has been a great influence to all of us. Especially to me, because this year I made the honor roll for the first time. She has been a wonderful role model to me. I love her,” says student Sarah Christman.
“We will miss her dearly and that is why this will mean a lot. She deserves this more than any teacher in Fort Wayne,” says student Jacob Kelly.
Mary Waning couldn't help but shed some tears as several of her students read their nomination letters. It's a bittersweet time for her. Next week, she will retire after 25 years of teaching.
Mary says, “I thought it was going to be easy and it isn't because I am going to miss the kids and I’m going to miss the people here.”
Student Justin Roberts says, “She never said, 'No I can't help you.' She was always ready to help.”
Student Luther Hall says, “She like never gave up and she always made simple shortcuts for things... Problems... And she just made everything really easy.
Mrs. Waning's students are elated to know that she will substitute teach next year when needed. She says even though she won't spend everyday in the classroom, teaching will always be in her heart.
Mary says, ”I love the children and I just enjoy it. It's different everyday... So I, really, really enjoy the joy of teaching.
Besides substitute teaching, Mrs. Waning plans to do some travelling when she retires. Most of her trips will be to visit her ten grandchildren.
