FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Former student Erin Crain says, “I was a broken-hearted third grader who didn't care about school. She encouraged me to do better and succeed. I later went on to Ball State University and earned my teaching degree. She inspired me and is the reason I am where I am today... all because she didn't give up on that broken-hearted little girl so many years ago.”

Before the winner’s name was announced the whole school knew it was Mrs. Sharon Orr.

September Golden Apple Award winner Sharon Orr says, “I love being a teacher and this is all the reward that I could possibly ask for... is just being able to serve all the boys and girls in my school.”

It was Crain that nominated Mrs. Orr.

Crain said, “I was from a home that had just gotten a divorce and my grandmother had just died, so I really didn't care about school anymore and she pushed me and pushed me and pushed me and at the end of the year, I was awarded the Kiwanis' Most Improved Student of the Year - all because of her. So, it's just my way of paying her back.”

Erin is now a special education teacher and actually works with Mrs. Orr on a daily basis here at Glenwood Park. Their special bond is one that can never be broken. It's the kind of connection they hope all students will be fortunate enough to have with one very special teacher.
